The lesson taught today was Introduction to different types of housing and how to plan for the costs and lifestyle associated. We first created a powerpoint that gave many visual references including layouts of dorms and apartments. We listed the pros and cons for each type of housing, and explained these by giving examples. We made a note sheet for the students to fill out while watching our powerpoint presentation. We also gave more insight by sharing personal experiences of living in each type of housing and the students were very interested to hear our thoughts. The material was very easy for them to relate to because they will be making these types of decisions very soon in their future, so they were very attentive.
After the powerpoint presentation, we created questions to ask each other that helped us open up with our personal experiences. While we were discussing our experience, the students opened right up and jumped in with questions. They enjoyed the stories we told and shared many of their own. After the discussion, we had the students fill out a worksheet that helped them make a housing decision based on the lesson's information. They were excited to share what they picked and why. Many of the students wrote on their worksheets that they chose certain living arrangements because of the pros and cons we had shared in our lecture.
I think we kept the students involved by using different teaching methods, and I would definitely do it the same way again. Although, I would prepare open-ended questions for the students next time in case they would not have gotten involved with the discussion. The assessment we used was the worksheet at the end of the lesson in which they were able to apply what they learned to their real life situations. Reading these responses helped us determine whether our teaching method was effective or not. I feel the class was very well organized and there was no need to make any management changes because the material kept them very attentive and respectful.
